Smells of China...

One thing I will not miss about China is some of the foreign and not-so-foreign smells.

1. The smell of damp heat rising off dirty streets and seeping out of grimy buildings…

2. The smell in convenience stores of boiling processed meats, seaweed, and tofu in some kind of broth…

3. The smell of eggs that have been hard boiled in tea…

4. The smell of cigarettes. EVERYWHERE.

5. The smell in public restrooms...

There are more but these are the top 5…. Wow.

  1. Can you please explain WHAT is in those pictures? It looks like wet tacos and, well, I don't know what. Are those the tea eggs? I remember walking through Chinatown in NYC (with a HUGE hangover) a few years ago, and it was NOT conducive to recovery from my said hangover. Super smelly!

  2. Yes... the top picture is the processed meat, seaweed, and tofu stewing in broth... It's suffacating. YUCK! The bottom picture is the tea eggs! If I was more blogging savvy... I could probably have made that more clear. Also, what I should have made more clear is the public restrooms... those things. wow. Chinese people think our sitting toilets are gross... I'll tell you what about their squatting toilets. a) The spray from peeing is nasty. If you can avoid getting it on your feet... consider yourself lucky. That doesn't include the spray that lands on the floor... and stays there. b) The trash can. TP doesn't flush here... It goes in the can and stays there until someone feels like taking care of it. For real. It's gross. It smells. Bad.
